Many are taking steps to improve household efficiency by upgrading to new HVAC equipment, installing high-efficiency windows or sealing air ducts. While there’s no doubt these techniques increase savings, you may have doubts about how well your efforts are paying off. How efficient is your home?

Energy Star has created a tool to help you compare how your household stacks up against others like it across America: The Home Energy Yardstick.

The Home Energy Yardstick is just one more way that Energy Star is fulfilling their goal of helping homeowners reduce their energy usage while sustaining the environment. Thanks to Energy Star’s hard work and the tips and tricks they provide, in one year U.S. homeowners were able to decrease dangerous emissions by the same amount that would have been produced by about 30 million cars.

You can access the Home Energy Yardstick for free online. It’s an easy-to-use calculator that rates your home against similar US homes, showing you how well you really score when it comes to home performance. Using the Yardstick should only take about five minutes, and you’ll be asked for some information, so have the following ready:

The energy sources your building runs on.
Data from your monthly, or annual, utility payments.
The number of square feet in your building.
While the Yardstick lets you choose between using monthly or annual utility payment information, we at Trumbull Mechanical Services Inc. recommend using monthly data. It gets more accurate results. However, start with last month’s data, not the current month’s, because it takes Energy Star about 30 days to update local weather information.

Once the Yardstick shows your score, see where your house falls on the efficiency scale. Is there room for improvement? If so, look to Energy Star’s Home Advisor for more ways to enhance home performance, or call TMS, Inc. 301.843.7477.

We’re proud to help Southern Maryland homeowners save money and stay comfortable.

Thanks,
Tim Johnson
President
TMS, Inc.

How to Identify a good Heating and Cooling Contractor

How To Identify A Good Heating and Cooling Contractor

The most important part of shopping for a new indoor comfort system is to pick the right contractor. Choose the wrong one, and you risk getting a new system that won’t keep you comfortable, won’t save you much if anything on your monthly utility bills, and may even fail after only a few years of operation. You must find a contractor who will select the right size of equipment for your home, install it properly, and uncover and solve any pre-existing problems with your duct system or house insulation. Here’s how to identify a contractor who will do the best job more important, here’s how to avoid picking one of the many contractors who might take shortcuts at your expense.

Don’t Assume That All Contractors Are “Pretty Much The Same”

All contractors are certainly not the same. Sad to say, a small minority are downright dishonest. Fortunately, the great majority of contractors are honest. They work hard, and mean well. Unfortunately, most simply don't have the business systems in place to properly serve the consumer. Even though they are honest, they are usually behind the times when it comes to diagnosing problems with today's more complicated furnaces and air conditioners. Fortunately, there are some contractors who are ethical, technically at the leading edge, and also have business and customer service systems in place that ensure high levels of client satisfaction. Invest the time to identify a good contractor. It will be time well spent.

Don’t Choose A “Fly-By-Night” Contractor

Heating and air conditioning is without a doubt the most complex home service trade. For your safety, choose a contractor that has some substance. Ask all prospective contractors:
· How many years has your company been in business?
· Are you registered or licensed by the state/province or city to do heating and air conditioning work?
· Do you carry both general liability and workers compensation insurance?
· Are your technicians certified to handle refrigerant gas?
· Are you a member of a national trade association?
· Do you have a permanent non-residence place of business, and what is the street address?
· Can you can provide names of satisfied customers in my neighborhood?
· Do your service technicians wear uniforms & ID badges?
· Do you offer 24 hour emergency service?
· Before signing an agreement, insist on seeing copies of all certificates and licenses

Don’t Assume A “Name Brand” Dealer Is Automatically

A Good Choice

Choosing a dealer for one of the best known national brands of equipment does not automatically guarantee you’ll get a contractor who understands the critical issues. Look first for one who recommends the Whole House Comfort Checkup procedure, this typically involves:
· a Computerized Equipment Sizing Calculation,
· duct system air flow and leakage diagnostics.

Don’t Ask If They Perform Diagnostics

When discussing your project with prospective contractors, don't ask if they will do or recommend the diagnostic steps described above. Wait and see if they bring up their importance. A good contractor will, a poor one won’t. Keep looking until you find one who recommends, offers or even better, insists on doing it the right way.

Don’t Be Misled By The Many Who Will

Only Offer To Replace Equipment

On the other hand, some contractors are aware of these problems, but simply don’t want to pay attention. Because of the equipment profit markup, contractors make the most money per hour when they just cut out old equipment, connect the new equipment, start it up and move on. Diagnosing and then fixing any pre-existing duct and insulation problems, installing the new equipment to industry and manufacturer guidelines, then testing the work, takes time to do right. An unscrupulous contractor won’t take that time. A quality contractor is more interested in serving you than in selling you. He builds his business on long term service relationships and referrals from extremely happy clients, rather than making the quick buck. He believes in truly solving his clients' problems and only putting in systems that really work right. Up-to-date, conscientious contractors are in the minority. But they are out there. Don’t be misled by the many contractors who either don’t know how to do it right, or just don’t care.

Don’t Choose A Contractor Who Doesn’t Ask A Lot Of Questions

A good contractor is committed to 100% customer satisfaction he knows that you and your family are the best source of information about these problems. He will always start by meeting with you and asking many questions, about areas that have been hard to heat or cool, air that is either too dry or too humid, about how the old system worked or didn’t work, and about what you are looking for in a new system. He’ll also ask if you are interested in reducing dust in the home, and if any family members suffer from respiratory allergies or asthma. A new system can often greatly improve the overall air quality in your home. This is especially so if duct and thermal envelope improvements are performed at the same time, and if the latest in air filtration and purification technology are built into your new system.

Don’t Choose A Contractor Who Doesn’t Explain Your Options

A good contractor understands his professional responsibility to advise you of your options, and won’t presume to make these important decisions for you. After going over what you want, and what has been learned about your home and duct system, a good contractor will use his professional judgment and experience to make a personalized proposal. He’ll be able to explain his reasons for the recommendations. Together you’ll come up with the right solution.

Don’t Focus Only On Initial Costs

Many people are concerned by the up front costs of doing the job right. Remember however that a good indoor comfort system, installed the way we recommend, really is an investment that will pay for itself through lower utility and repair bills. Properly installed new high efficiency systems, when combined with repairs to the ducts and thermal envelope, regularly do cut the heating and cooling portion of utility bills by 40% to 50%. It’s usually worth investing more up front, in order to reduce the long term costs of ownership, and just as important to many people is that a totally new system is far more reliable and less likely to break down at inconvenient times.

Don’t Assume The Lowest Price Company Is

The One You Should Hire

While price matters, don't let the initial price be the only consideration when choosing a heating and cooling contractor. It is our experience that the low priced contractor is rarely the best value. It usually ends up costing more, in terms of unreliable operation, an uncomfortable home, repeated visits to get problems resolved, higher utility bills, and even unsafe operation.

Don’t Choose A Contractor Who Wants You To Pay Cash

Avoid any contractor who wants you to pay cash with no receipt. This is a sure sign of tax problems you want no part of. Also, with no proof of payment, you will likely be unable to get any warranty repairs performed.

Don’t Try To Buy A New System Over The Phone

And finally, don’t try to buy a new system by collecting bids over the telephone. In order to ensure 100% customer satisfaction, honest, reputable companies need to meet with you, so if a contractor won’t give you a price for new equipment over the phone, don't dismiss them as if they don't know what they are doing. On the contrary, you should be extremely wary of any contractor that is willing to give you a price over the phone.

A Unique Opportunity

If you just want to get the heating or cooling back on, and don’t really care how well your new system performs, or about how long it lasts, or whether you actually save any money on your utility bills, the Yellow Pages are full of contractors you can call. And in those cases, it is probably best to just go with the lowest bid, however, if you want to get the best value for your money, solve existing discomfort or dust problems, and end up with a new comfort system you will be proud to own and enjoy for many years to come, take the time to identify one of the few contractors who can really put your new system in right. This is a unique opportunity. All of these are capable of heating air, and when paired with a fan, blower or air handler, can distribute heated air throughout your home.

Many forced air heating systems are remarkably energy efficient, they are generally made to be incorporated with central air conditioning systems. Heat pumps are especially convenient in this way, as they’re able to heat and cool your home.

If you already have ductwork in place or if you’re choosing a heating system for a new construction home, it can make a lot of sense to opt for some type of forced air heating.

However, if you’re looking to replace an existing heating system in a house that doesn’t already have ductwork in place call TMS, Inc. at 301-843-7477 and speak with one of our Forced Air Specialist.

Trumbull Mechanical Services has a design department that is second to none. Don’t worry, if there is not an existing duct system in your home our design department can design the perfect system to fit your home and increase your comfort in the winter and summer.

Trane Air Conditioning A Healthy New Approach

A Trane air condition system can give you healthier air. But that efficiency will not last unless you also take the necessary steps to keep your equipment in good working order. While regular maintenance visits from a professional HVAC technician are an important part of this, there are also several things you can do on your own to keep your equipment running at peak efficiency.

Keep it Clear – The first thing you should do is to make sure that there is plenty of space cleared around your outdoor unit. Whether it is the condenser and compressor for your air conditioning system or part of your heat pump, that outdoor equipment needs to have plenty of space to vent hot air. Also, the space will mean that debris is less likely to develop inside the unit.

Clean the Condensing Coil – While your technician will do this when they make their annual visit, it is best to clean your coil more than just once a year. Just make sure that the power is turned off to your unit before you begin. This will help the unit cool air more efficiently and can prevent a whole host of other problems from developing.

Check on the Blower – If your blower is not working right or the blade is clogged, your HVAC unit will not work properly. Make sure your blower fan is free of all debris and that is turns freely once you have cleaned it. If you are still having a problem with it, you may have to call a technician for repairs. Cleaning the blower out on a regular basis, however, should keep this from becoming a problem you need a professional for.

Air Filters – You should also make sure you change your air filters regularly. This can help to keep your indoor air clean and healthy and it will also enable your HVAC system to run more efficiently.

Clean it Out – Clean out any debris that you can reach from any part of your system. Just make sure any time you work inside your HVAC system that you have all of the power turned off. Anything from leaves to dust can get in there and cause a problem if it is allowed to build up over time.

As long as you are on top of things and keep to a regular schedule of maintenance, none of this should take you very long. TMS, Inc. offers
Two great Service Maintenance Contract Agreements. Give us a call (301.843.7477) and speak with one of our customer service reps, one of them will be happy to advise you of the maintenance plan that will fit your needs and help to maintain your HVAC system for many years to come.

Save by Caulking Crevices and Penetrations

Save by Caulking Crevices and Penetrations They are nothing to be ashamed of. Really, everyone has them. You know – those little cracks and crevices that you always mean to get around to caulking but just have not found the time for yet. But they are so small, they cannot possibly be causing that many problems, right? Well, not exactly. In fact, any small space that can let air in or out of your house could be costing you money – and a considerable amount too. The truth is that, next to inadequate insulation, leaks and drafts are some of the biggest drains on your home heating and cooling system. After all, you are paying to heat or cool the air inside your house in order to keep the indoor environment comfortable all year round. But you do not want to be paying more than you need to be. That is why you bought the high efficiency HVAC system in the first place. If you have lots of drafts and cracks in various places throughout your house, however, you are almost certainly spending more than necessary to keep your house comfortable. And the solution is so simple. You do not need to go out and spend a ton of money on an even more expensive heating and cooling system. All you really need to do is make sure that your home is sealed up as well as possible. And that means sealing up all of the cracks. Caulking is an extremely effective way of doing this, and it costs very little, particularly if you take on the job yourself. But even if you hire a professional, the amount that you have to pay out will be returned to you many times over in savings on your monthly heating and cooling bills. There simply is no substitute for sealing up your house tight when you are trying to save money on heating and cooling costs.

When to Replace Your Air Conditioning System

When to Replace Your Air Conditioning System

One of the last things you probably want to think about is replacing your current air conditioning system. However, the time will come when you can no longer ignore the fact that your air conditioning system is not getting the job done like it used to. And considering your replacement options early can help save you a lot of money and aggravation in the long run.

Before you can start looking at replacement options, though, you need to be aware that the time has come to replace your current model. But how can you tell that your air conditioner is on its way out? Well, there are actually quite a few warning signs that, if you are attuned to them, will help you determine whether or not it is the right time to replace.

First of all, if you have to call for repairs, even minor ones, on a regular basis, chances are that you would be better off replacing rather than continuing to patch up the air conditioning system you already have. This is true for several reasons including the fact that a system that requires repairs so often is probably not going to last you much longer anyway.

By replacing now rather than continuing to pay for repairs, you will save a lot of money in the long run. After all, you are going have to pay for the new system sooner or later, so you might as well skip the shelling out of extra cash to repair a system you are just going to get rid of anyway.

Problems like inadequate or uneven cooling or mismanaged humidity levels in your home are a good sign that something is not working right in your air conditioning system and that it may be time to replace. At the very least, you should call someone out to take a look and let you know what type of repairs you are looking at.

You should also think about replacing an older system even if it is still working fine because the newer systems available are much more energy efficient than even the top of the line models available ten years ago. While you will have to pay the purchase and installation cost up front, you will immediately begin to save substantial amounts on your monthly cooling bills.

Why Select a Two Stage AC vs. Single Stage Air Conditioner

When you are in the market for a new air conditioner, one of the decisions you will have to make is whether you want a two stage system or one that only functions in a single stage. Of course, before you can make a decision about this, you need to know what all of this means.

A single stage air conditioning system is probably what you are most familiar with. They have been around longer and can be found in a wide variety of locations. Single stage air conditioners come on at full capacity when the temperature in your home rises above the preset level on the thermostat. Once they have effectively cooled the house, these types of air conditioners shut off until the temperature works its way back up again.

Two stage air conditioners, on the other hand, can function at either 67% or 100% of capacity depending on exactly how warm it is in your home. What that really means is that if the temperature in your home is only a little above the thermostat’s preset limit, the air conditioning system will come on at 67% and gradually cool the house to keep it right in a comfortable range.

However, if you have not been home for a while and your home has gotten very warm inside, your air conditioner will come on at full power to get the temperature down quickly. What this really means is that your air conditioner will be running more than a single stage air conditioner because it will sometimes not be using all of its power to cool.

The end result of using a two stage air conditioner is that you will receive a relatively continuous flow of cool air throughout your home. A two stage air conditioner will send in a steady but smaller stream of cooled air as opposed to the large blast of cold air you would get from a single stage system.

This results in a more consistent and comfortable environment overall, and it also makes it possible for the air conditioning system to dehumidify your house more effectively. When the air is cooled too quickly, the dehumidification system does not always have time to do its job. But with the longer cooling cycles of the two stage system, there is plenty of time to make sure the right amount of humidity is removed from the air.
For more information call TMS, Inc. at 301.843.7477 or 1-877-523-2600. If you have a heat pump, make sure to slowly increase the temperature to avoid running the emergency heat. You can learn more about your thermostat online by visiting the U.S. Department of Energy website.

Seal air leaks.
Seal all holes from pipes and wires that enter/exit the living space. This includes entrances, pull-downs and attic stair openings, light fixtures, pipes and wires. Attic entryways should be weather stripped and insulated.

Seal off fireplaces.
Never use a fireplace as a heat source for your home. Even as a supplemental heat source, the cold air introduced to a warm home through an open flue isn't as efficient as sealing off a fireplace and using the primary source of heat. For natural gas fireplaces, turn off the pilot light when not in use. Seal off the fireplace area or the flue area to prevent cold air from leaking in. (Note: Building codes in some areas require that the damper in your chimney to be permanently blocked open if you install gas logs. Please check the building code for your area for the appropriate procedure.)

Seal duct work.
This is the number one way to conserve energy. Make sure that all ductwork is sealed at joints and intersections with duct sealer or silicone caulk. Otherwise, supply ductwork can leak heated air into the attic or crawl space, and outside air can be drawn into the return ductwork, increasing costs and reducing comfort dramatically. Ducts can be sealed using foil-backed tape or silicon caulking.

Lower water heater to 120-125 degrees.
Many water heaters are automatically set at 140 degrees. Lowering the temperature on your water heater to between 120 and 125 degrees will reduce the amount of fuel needed to heat the water.

Change furnace filters every month.
This is the number one reason for furnace breakdowns. Inspect heating and cooling equipment annually, or as recommended by the manufacturer. Have a professional check and clean furnaces once a year.

Weatherstrip doors and windows.
Inspect windows and doors for air leaks. If you can see daylight around a door or window frame, then the door or window needs sealing. Air leaks can be sealed with caulking or weather-stripping.

Insulate water pipes coming from the water heater.
Insulate the first 3- to 6-feet of cold and hot water pipes near the water heater. Insulating all hot water pipes is not necessary where pipes are located in a crawlspace or attic.

Add an insulation blanket to water heater.
Wrapping the water heater with an insulation blanket can save heating money by slowing the drop in temperature from the hot water tank as it sits unused. Inexpensive insulation kits are available at most home improvement stores.

Add insulation to attic.
When adding insulation, start at the top and work down only after eliminating air infiltration.

For more information on how you can save on your winter heating cost or your summer cooling cost, call TMS, Inc. at 1-877-523-2600 or go to our web site at www.tmsinconline.com

Add Humidity Indoors

Add Humidity to a Home in Winter

When the cold winter winds blow outside, people indoors jack up the heat to a higher degree. While this may allay the chill seeping into the house, it also robs rooms of valuable humidity. As the air inside dries, skin, hair, and nails dry along with it, potted plants suffer, and health is affected. How can you add humidity to a home in Winter without the use of a central humidifier appliance? There are several inexpensive and simple ways to maintain or increase moisture levels for maximum comfort.

Add Humidity Indoors Use Humidifiers

Electronic humidifiers are not only useful for babies and children with chest colds. Use either a warm or cool air humidifier in the main rooms of your house as well as the bedrooms to increase moisture content in the air. Be careful when running a humidifier. The steam vent should be pointed away from walls and furniture and the water level must be maintained properly.

Add Humidity Indoors - Water House Plants Well

Not only will your thirsty houseplants thank you for watering them more frequently in the dry indoor winter air, the moisture in the soil can help add humidity to the room as well. Plants constantly release water vapor through their leaves, and the soil and tray under the potted plant can also be a source of evaporated humidity.

Add Humidity Indoors - Dry Laundry Indoors

While hanging out socks from a rack in the living room might not be in line with "House Beautiful" standards, it will help add humidity to a home in winter. Put pressure bars in doorways or hang shirts on hangers hooked to door frames. Not only will you add moisture to the air, you will save on electricity costs by not running your dryer.

Add Humidity Indoors - Direct Water

To add even more humidity to your home in winter, set out shallow dishes filled with water here and there throughout the room. Especially put one wherever the hot air vents blow air. This will speed up the evaporation and circulate more moisture. You can also purchase a small spray bottle that creates a fine mist. Using renewable solar power displaces the power consumers purchase through their electric utilities, he points out.

The energy efficiency gains are quite significant. “For instance, on a standard AHRI cooling test with 95 degree outdoor temperature, the efficiency of the unit is increased by 6% when full sun is available. This saves the homeowner by lowering cooling costs but also reduces the amount of power that must be generated and transmitted through the grid by the electric utility. The single solar panel provides dc power to assist the fan that moves air across the outdoor coil, a key part of any home comfort system. This fan has an ac motor for normal operation and a special dc motor that assists whenever sufficient sunlight is available. “It is a form of hybrid drive: as the solar powered dc motor is able to take over the fan load, the ac motor just backs-off on power consumption. This is a continuous transition, even on days with limited sun, the SunSource™ system takes advantage of the available solar resources and reduces energy usage.

The system will initially be available in a heat pump model, since heat pumps are used throughout the year and offer homeowners the greatest benefit. The approximately 3 ft. x 5 ft. solar panel can be easily installed , with a variety of mounting options available.

“Most of the additional cost for the SunSource™ system is associated with the solar panel and will adjust as solar panel pricing declines. The estimated payback period will vary, he says, depending on location, future electric rates, and the total cost of installation. The federal 30% solar tax credit and state and local rebates reduce the additional cost and payback period.

As a compact and relatively inexpensive introduction to the energy-saving benefits of solar power, the Lennox SunSource™ system has many advantages. “The system can help reduce peak demand, increase energy efficiency, and maintain homeowner comfort. It’s an effective way for environmentally aware homeowners to get started quickly with solar.”

You can receive more information on Lennox SunSource by calling TMS Inc at 301.843.7477 visiting http://www.tmsinconline.com

Why Clean Your Air Ducts

Why Clean Your Air Ducts?

It comes as a shock to most homeowners to know they keep a hidden "dirty room" in their house.

The humid air ducts in which germs breed and are circulated. Such contamination can create serious health hazards, especially to those persons susceptible to allergies and to other respiratory ailments. When the air ducts are not clean it's just like having a dirty room in the house. Most homeowners are completely unaware of this "dirty room". Why?

First, they may feel that their heating and cooling system doesn't allow any dust into their duct system. Second, they may believe that their filters keep the system clean even if their heating or cooling system does circulate dust. A typical filter in your home or office collects only about 7% to 10% of the dust and carbon particles circulating through your system's duct work; which means that up to 93% of the airborne contaminants circulates through them. A good portion of these pollutants settle in the duct work and provide breeding grounds for bacteria, fungi, mold spores, dust mites and other harmful allergens.

Every heating and cooling system depends on the flow of air. As this air circulates, it picks up some of the lint, dust particles, animal dander and other types of particles which normally occur in every home and deposits it in the ducts where it collects and builds up. The solution to this dilemma is air washing the duct system with a unique machine called "Rotobrush". Our process of dust, bacteria, and odor removal is a simple, yet extremely effective procedure that begins with drawing a very high-powered vacuum from the plenum at the furnace (supply and return air) , while simultaneously "Air Washing" the duct system with our patented 250 P.S.I. "Skipper" (a high pressure nozzle that is inserted into the system and propels itself through the duct work) The third step of our process is to clean the plenums, furnace, evaporator coil (optional blower compartment and the blower fan itself).

Once your air duct system has been vacuumed and cleaned, the best method to help maintain your duct system and keep it clear of pollutants in the future is to install Guardian Air System. A top-quality, efficient electrostatic filter will trap 96% of any particulate as small as .3 of a micron. A grain of salt is 20-178 microns in diameter.Air duct cleaning will benefit your family's health by alleviating indoor allergies and respiratory problems.

It will prolong the life of your entire heating and cooling system and will reduce the cost of operating your system. Air duct cleaning also increases your cooling and heating efficiency, plus less time is spent dusting and cleaning your home or office. Unlike other so-called cleaning firms, TMS, Inc. removes the dust and debris from the duct system.

We do not attempt to cover up the contamination problem with chemicals that may eventually flake off making the air quality in the home or office even worse.Doesn't it make sense to protect your family and home with the best duct cleaning money can buy?

Give TMS, Inc. a call and schedule your duct cleaning today 301.843.7477 or go on line and check us out at tmsinconline.com

Respectfully.
Tim Johnson
Operations Manager and Your Comfort Specialist

Why Clean Your Air Ducts?

It comes as a shock to most homeowners to know they keep a hidden "dirty room" in their house.

The humid air ducts in which germs breed and are circulated. Both of these can be the right choice in certain situations and you must do your research to decide which one is right for you. The following article will lay out some benefits and drawbacks of each and should help you determine which HVAC unit will provide you with the most cost benefit and longevity.

Most people will greatly benefit by installing a heat pump. A heat pump is more efficient than a central air unit and has the added benefit of being able to not only cool the home but also heat it to a certain degree. Once the outside air gets too cold, however, a heat pump will no longer be able to produce heat and a backup source of heat will be necessary. Many times the extra expense of a heat pump up front will be offset by the savings in electricity over the life of the unit. Often, this payback can occur in a very short time. If both a heating and cooling unit is necessary for a home, and the winter temperatures are quite mild, then a heat pump can be an excellent choice to consolidate the HVAC system.

A traditional central air unit will be slightly cheaper than a heat pump. Many people will install central air without even considering a heat pump. This is because they are used to central air and are often afraid of trying a different technology. A central air unit will use slightly more electricity to cool the home than a heat pump. A central air unit can be a good choice if you want to save a little bit of money up front and you already have a good heating unit in place.

Determining which HVAC system is right for you can be a tricky decision. Both of these HVAC units should last about the same time frame. The decision really comes down to whether or not you have a good backup heat source and what types of winters your region experiences. If you are local to Maryland, give us a call here at Trumbull Mechanical Sevices, Inc., 301-843-7477 and we can do a free evaluation of your system and make recommendations on which options are best for your home. The system contains the same components as your typical split-system—the evaporator, condenser, compressor and more—all working together in one space-saving unit.
